Get Ready for Washington, DC, Trip!

Dear Incoming 7th Grade Parents:

As you are all aware, the 7th Grade students will be visiting Washington DC from October 10th
through October 12th. We are all looking forward to this trip which has been a tradition at Orville A. Todd Middle School for over twenty-five years! While the purpose of the trip is for a fun, interactive, exploration of US History and American Culture, the safety of our students and staff is always of paramount importance.

With safety in mind, we want all students and parents to be aware that the Washington DC trip is a privilege. Our goal is to have every 7th grade student on the trip. However, some students, due to their maturity level and behavior, may not be able to handle the responsibility required to ensure a safe and orderly trip for themselves and others. We will be monitoring student behavior very closely in September and October. If we feel your child is a safety concern, we will consider removing him or her from the trip. However, we will follow our progressive discipline practices so that students and their families will receive due notice of this possibility. Our Code of Conduct  provides an excellent overview of the types of behaviors that would be a safety concern on the trip. If your child engages in these behaviors during September and October, we will have conversations with you and your child regarding the trip. If we decide to remove your child from the trip, you will receive a refund of any money paid.

We will send this letter to you again at the end of August and review the contents of the letter thoroughly with students when they arrive in September. However, you should begin to have conversations with your child over the summer. This is highly recommended for parents whose students have had more than one discipline-related issue during 6th Grade. Please be aware that if there is a significant or ongoing behavior issue with your child on the trip, you will be required to drive to Washington, DC, to pick up your child.

Thank you very much for your support and we are looking forward to a great trip in October!
